About Us

The Department of European Languages and Literature was established under the name of Department of English Language in 1969. The department is credited with being the first one to be launched in the College of Arts and Humanities and the first one to grant a BA degree in English language. In 1980, French was introduced as a departmental core course, and subsequently the French Language Section was opened in 1983. Also in 1983, the department was renamed Department of European Languages and Literature, offering BA degrees in both English and French. The Department is currently developing a translation track that would provide a curriculum leading to a Bachelor's degree. The aim is to train professional translators and interpreters to meet the increasing demand. Students studying in the department can work in various fields, to name a few, tourism or civil aviation industry, museums and art galleries, English teachers, editors, media correspondents, reporters, translators, finance and banking, oil companies, foreign service and academia.
